The Secret Power of Your Mind
Using the Power of Your Mind to Be Healthy
“The simple truth is, happy people generally don’t get sick. One’s attitude toward oneself is the single most important factor in healing or staying well. Those who are at peace with themselves and their immediate surroundings have far fewer serious illnesses than those who are not.” Could it be the secret power of your mind that communicates with your cells? Bernie Siegel, MD. Love, Medicine & Miracles
Even when nutrients are scarce and toxins abundant, one’s potential for health is limitless. It relies on ourselves and the power of our minds. You are what you think. All the cells in our body contribute to what we call the mind. What goes on in our mind affects what happens in all our cells. Our thoughts, emotions, and interactions create chemical reactions throughout our bodies. Modern science has proven that these “thought chemicals” either can be beneficial or detrimental to health. We can choose what we put into our minds, and in doing so, we can choose between health and disease.
- We double our risk of catching a cold by the number of stressful events we experience. According to a 1991 study in the New England Journal of Medicine. They found that stressful life situations (such as losing a job, overwhelm, death of loved one) affects our immune system.
- A 2001 study in Psychosomatic Medicine found that optimism protects against heart disease. Pessimistic people are much more likely to die of a heart attack than those that are optimistic.
Believe In Your Health
You must believe in your health if you are to maintain or regain health. Be pro-active for your health when you are well. And actively pursue wellness when you are ill. Even when you do not FEEL well you can repeat an affirmation. Say something such as Every day, in every way, I am getting stronger and better. These affirmations have a profound effect on the mind which in turn affects the cells. Health and disease can be the reactions of the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind takes orders from the conscious mind and puts them into action. Beliefs, attitudes, and patterns of behavior play a major role in health and disease. Our state of mind is as much a part of our lifestyle as our diet, amount of sleep or exercise.
Modern health care focuses almost exclusively on diagnosing and treating the physical body. Usually with drugs or surgery. It fails to consider the emotional, cognitive and spiritual factors that play a role in becoming sick or well.
Believing you “have” a disease and playing the role of a “sick person” is the way to stay sick. By contrast, being healthy means believing that you are getting well and staying well. It means “playing the role” of health. Every thought has a physical effect on your cells. Negative thoughts, particularly about disease and death, can kill you.
Patients, positive attitudes toward their health or disease help to make them not only informed but also empowered. As Bernie Siegel, MD. said in Love, Medicine & Miracles, the patient must be the primary source of healing. “Exceptional patients, “refuse to be victims. They educate themselves and become specialists in their own care. They demand dignity, personhood, and control, no matter what the course of the disease.
